Police tests out "star weapon"

The newspaper Agderposten (23.03.2007) reports from the Police testing of a new telescope to find out what the driver is doing.

The Police is looking for the use of safety belts and not using handheld mobile telephones. The safety belt is required to be used and the last is prohibited during driving in Norway. The telescope is so good that the Police can read the mobile phone mark on long distance.

They can further se drivers reading papers held in front of them. The drivers braking the roles are fined.

The aim is to reduce the number of drivers not concentrating in the driving.

It is left to be seen how the Police treat those operating their Office on the Road.

GPS bullet for the Police

Jyllandsposten reports 22. November 2007 from a new development where the police from their police car can shoot a GPS bullet on to another vehicle. The bullet will stick to the car and report position back to the police.  The position report will be a good documentation for the speed of the car.

In the same article a new police car, E7 is described, produced by Carbon Motors. The car is designed as a police car from the beginning to take care of the special requirements which the police have.

Speed control in 2007

The Police speed controlled 1.8 million cars in 2007. This is around 72 % of the total number of cars. This means that in average a car is not controlled each year.  In total 90,693 drivers were stopped due to too high speed and 6922 of these lost their driver license.

The control by photo boxes resulted in 1453 drivers loosing the driving license during 2007. This was a reduction compared to 2006. The reason may be the GPS photo box alarms which may be bought legally in Norway. These give the driver a warning some few hundred meters ahead of a photo box giving the driver the possibility to reduce the car speed. Why do we allow the use and marketing of a device helping the drivers breaking the traffic rules to avoid being caught and punished?
