Old roads

The Romans was famous for building roads. One of the 7 roads out of Rom was via Cassia. This road went all the way to London and passed on the way Viterbo and Montefiascone. Between these two towns parts of the old road is still in good shape and in daily use.

Road environments

Some places the cutting through the stufa rock is giving just space for the road. The roc cutting ends more or less at the white line on the side of the road. The stufa rock is rather loos and this sides of the road may be rather safe.

The picture to the right is just west of Montefiascone in the Viterbo province.

No side way barrier protects the vehicles from hitting a strong tree at the side of the road.

The first tree is marked with a reflection red area. What does that help if the vehicle has lost the right track?

This road is going from Montalto and eastwards. This lack of the side barriers are rather common in this part of Italy.

Safety against falling rocks

In the Italian mountains the protection against falling rocks are taken care of.

The protection of the roads are adjusted to the risk.

Some examples are shown here.

Speed control (ATC)

The information about speed control is quite frequent.  If this is done by manual lasers or automated cameras is not known. Nothing was seen which could be the one or the other.

A number of the vehicles on these roads kept a speed clearly over the speed limit. This could indicate that the active speed control was not in operation.

Quite frequently the stop places are arranged. Here the vehicles may stop to answer the mobile telephone calls, in case of emergency or for a rest.
