The protection against falling rocks are quite good. The method used is depending of the situation and the possible size of the rocks.

The pictures shown here are all taken along one single road in Umbria. This is the mountain area north and west of Rom.

For the most heavy fences the wires between each pole had a strong spring at each end.

If the rock fences could not give the right safety, the road was totally protected by a concrete roof or the road was taken through a tunnel.

The tunnel has good reflection marking on each side. The systematic use of red marking is to the right and white to the left.
