The road safety situation in Italy

The road safety situation in Italy is referred on the IRTAD homepage. Here data is given for 2004 with 9.7 killed pr. 100000 Population. This is more then twice the figure for the best in Europe, Netherland having 4.5 and Sweden 4.9, both in 2006. The value for Norway is 5.2 in 2006.

Drivers and attitudes

The Italian are known for speaking with the arms and the whole body. If you bind the arms of an Italian, he can not speak. The driving of cars have some parallel.

Roads

Italy has roads of quite varied standards.

Via Cassia is one of the old Roman roads.

Protection against falling rocks

Along one road in Umbria, the protection against falling rock on the road was quite good.

New police cars

Aftenposten.no reports on 8th July 2009 that the Italian police has got two new police cars as shown below.

The Lamborghini with 500 Hp motor. 0 to 100 km/hour is done in 4 seconds and the maximum speed is 315 km/hour.

It is left to be seen if the total number of killed is reduced by these tools. Used in the wrong way, the number of accidents may increase.

The owner of the VW Polo had to know the width of the car before the purchase. That was needed to get home through the narrow street to his house. A VW Polo was just small enough.

This is the situation in a number of the old cities, but not in all!

In the city of Farnese there is just one street wide enough for cars. The rest of the streets are simply too narrow. Outside the city wall a large parking place is therefore established.

The very limit is found in Venetia. Here the vehicles have to be parked just outside the city. Inside the rather large city of Venetia the only transport possible is by boat or by foot. In some few "streets" you can not pass another person between the two walls. Is this one part of the popularity of Venetia?
