The car industry has done a good job in
improving the cars to protect the persons inside the vehicle
in case of an accident.
For each accident on the roads, the damaged cars may be
repaired or is scraped. In both cases the car industry normally
gets the economic benefit. A new car gives a profit or the
repair is often done by a workshop owned by the car selling company.
What are we talking about in actual money per annum? The
total amount paid by the insurance companies in 2006 in Norway
for car accidents was in the order of 10 billion NOK. The
private area got 8.5 billion NOK and the commercial segment got
1.5 billion NOK. This compensation is covering material claims
with approximately 60 % of the amount. The rest of the
compensation is paid to persons and others. This indicates an
amount of 6 billion NOK for the repair and replacement of the
damaged cars during one year. Recalculated to a standard vehicle
costing NOK 250,000, this represent around 24,000 new cars.
This calculation indicate a real loss if
the Vision Zero was implemented.
